Religion is one to the main subjects studied in schools, colleges and institutions of higher learning in Nigeria. As a multi-cultural and religious nation, it is not only studied academically; it is also practiced in various forms. The relevance of religion to life does not therefore need to be over-emphasized. It occupies a vantage position in socio-economic, cultural and political discourses. The vast majority of mankind recognizes its importance in their daily experiences. Even the few who disparage it cannot ignore it. Therefore, a subject as relevant to life as religion surely deserves a thorough study of its content and praxis for proper understanding and application. That explains why the Nigerian Association for the Study of Religions (NASR) was established in 1975. This was after Prof. J. Omosade Awolalu had the unique privilege of attending the conference of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) in August, 1975.
The Nigerian Association for the Study of Religions (NASR) is an organization which encourages academic study and teaching of religions, and provides a unique forum for frank and meaningful dialogue on inter-religious issues for mutual understanding and cooperation among Nigerians in particular and mankind in general. Beyond these, the association aims to get governments, religious institutions and the general public informed and interested in its activities with other similar associations on the African continent and international arena. It is worthy to note that the government and its agents have always been interested and involved in the activities of the association. The association acknowledges with deep appreciation the goodwill and support or Governors, Ministers, Commissioners, Vice-Chancellors and government functionaries at various time.
In pursuance of its aim and objectives, the association has published many books and up-to-date editions of its journal, Religions, since its inception in 1975. The journal always contains papers of topical interest from experts in the three major religions in Nigeria. Also, the association has made significant contributions to the development of the nation over the years by involving itself in discussion of national issues through themes and topics that are addressed at its national conference. Indeed, the association believes that religion, if properly articulated and expertly utilized, will be a factor for development in Nigeria.
